The Project

Located in the scenic hills of West Austin, Texas, this project represents the pinnacle of modern transitional design through precision millwork and thoughtful architectural detailing. The primary objective was to create a harmonious flow between the home’s levels while maximizing the utility and aesthetic appeal of a specialized alcove. By utilizing premium White Oak and integrated technology, our team transformed standard functional elements into bespoke design statements.

The Architectural Staircase

The centerpiece of the renovation is the custom-fabricated staircase. Utilizing high-grade White Oak, each tread was meticulously finished to highlight the natural grain, providing a warm contrast to the crisp white interior. The minimalist handrail and modern balustrades emphasize clean lines, ensuring the staircase acts as a sculptural element rather than just a functional transition. The joinery reflects a commitment to durability and silent operation, a hallmark of high-end craftsmanship.

Custom Floating Shelving & Built-ins

Complementing the vertical design of the stairs, we installed a custom-built alcove unit. This feature includes heavy-duty floating shelves made from matching White Oak, designed to support significant weight without visible brackets. To elevate the visual impact, we integrated recessed LED strip lighting within each shelf. This architectural lighting provides a soft, warm glow that highlights the wood’s texture and provides functional task lighting for the white minimalist base cabinetry below. The final result is a cohesive, modern interior that celebrates natural materials and precision engineering.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

White Oak is highly sought after for Austin residences due to its exceptional Janka hardness rating and superior stability. Unlike softer species, it resists the expansion and contraction caused by Texas humidity fluctuations. We enhance this natural durability with a premium conversion varnish finish, protecting the wood grain while maintaining a contemporary, matte aesthetic.
Our custom floating shelves utilize internal heavy-duty steel armatures and precision-routed channels. This engineering allows the White Oak shelves to support substantial loads for books or decor without the need for unsightly external brackets. We also integrate reveal calibration techniques to ensure every shelf sits perfectly flush against the wall for a seamless, minimalist look.
While best addressed during the design phase of a new project, we specialize in retrofitting integrated LED strips into custom millwork. For the West Austin project, we utilized recessed channels and concealed wiring runs to provide soft, functional illumination that highlights the natural wood texture without visible hot spots or cabling.
To ensure silent operation, we utilize precision-milled joinery where treads and risers are both glued and mechanically fastened with high-performance adhesives. By eliminating wood-on-wood friction points and using thick-milled White Oak treads, we prevent the seasonal movement that typically leads to noise, ensuring a quiet transition between home levels.
Most bespoke projects require a lead time of 8 to 14 weeks. This window accounts for the detailed design phase, local material sourcing, and shop fabrication at our Austin facility. Our process includes a final site measure after drywall to ensure that the installation of large elements, like a sculptural staircase, is executed with millimeter precision.
