The Project Vision

In the hills of West Austin, we were tasked with transforming a small, underutilized alcove into a premium wine display. The objective was to create a high-impact architectural feature that provided functional climate-controlled storage while maintaining a light, modern footprint within the home's transitional interior.

Materials and Design

The centerpiece of this installation is the custom-milled White Oak cabinetry. Chosen for its tight grain and warm, neutral palette, the oak provides a timeless structure that contrasts beautifully with the industrial edge of the matte black metal wine pegs. This hybrid storage approach allows for both label-forward display on the walls and traditional racking below, maximizing the utility of the small square footage.

The Craft and Execution

Precision was paramount in this compact space. The cellar is enclosed by floor-to-ceiling glass doors with minimalist brass hardware, requiring flawless joinery as every detail is visible from the living area. We integrated custom-cut shelving and a central pedestal that serves as a focal point for decanting. The finished project represents a perfect marriage of high-end millwork and modern transparency, providing the client with a museum-quality display for their growing collection.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

White Oak is highly sought after in Central Texas for its exceptional density and high tannin content, which provides natural rot resistance in humidity-controlled environments. For our West Austin projects, we utilize rift-sawn White Oak to ensure superior dimensional stability and a modern, linear grain that resists the expansion and contraction typical of the Austin climate.
Our wine cellar installations utilize low-E, UV-rated tempered glass integrated with precision-engineered gaskets. During the installation, we perform a detailed reveal calibration to ensure the custom White Oak millwork and minimalist brass hardware create an airtight thermal break, protecting your collection from temperature fluctuations while maintaining a high-end aesthetic.
Metal pegs allow for a high-impact, label-forward display that modernizes the cellar's profile. By combining these with custom-milled White Oak shelving, we create a hybrid storage solution that maximizes vertical space and accessibility. This is a popular trend in Austin luxury homes, as it allows collectors to showcase specific vintages as architectural art.
We apply a high-solids conversion varnish to all of our custom millwork. Unlike standard lacquers, this professional-grade finish provides a chemically-cured barrier that is moisture-resistant and extremely durable, ensuring that the White Oak cabinetry maintains its luster even when exposed to the 55-65 percent humidity levels required for long-term wine storage.
For high-end West Austin installations, the timeline from final design approval to site installation is typically 10 to 14 weeks. Because we operate a local Austin shop, we handle all fabrication and finishing in-house, which allows us to oversee every detail of the joinery and provide a more predictable schedule compared to builders who outsource their millwork.
