Simplistic Architectural Metal Wine Display Under Floating Stairs
The Vision: Maximizing Neglected Space
The area beneath a staircase often presents a unique design challenge—unused potential that can quickly become an overlooked corner. For this contemporary residential project, the objective was to transform this dead space into a sophisticated architectural focal point. We utilized a minimalist approach to create an 'under the stairs' wine cellar that emphasizes clean lines, accessibility, and high-end aesthetics while maintaining the home's open feel.
Modern Materiality and Design
The project features custom black metal wine racks designed with a sleek floor-to-ceiling mounting system. The industrial edge of the matte metal provides a striking contrast against the warmth of the thick white oak stair treads. To enhance the visual impact of the collection, we incorporated soft, diffused backlighting. This illumination creates a glow that highlights the bottle silhouettes, turning functional storage into a piece of gallery-style art. The simplistic design ensures that the wine collection remains the primary focus of the display.
Efficient Installation and Functionality
Streamlined execution was a priority for this project. We successfully completed the entire installation in just a single day, minimizing disruption to the household. As a non-conditioned cellar, this installation was specifically designed for wines intended for frequent rotation and easy access rather than long-term climate-controlled aging. The result is a practical, highly organized storage solution that leverages the home's ambient environment, proving that luxury design can be both efficient and accessible.
